The story of how he came to me, and how he received his name, is for another time. For now, I have been reflecting on our friendship of more than 12 years. As I write this, he is still vibrant, active, and loving. I know his days are numbered. I have tried,<br \/>\nand he has returned my affection 100 times over.<br \/>\nIt has been a wonderful friendship.<\/p>\n<p>It is said that all good things must end.<br \/>\nHowever true that may be, it is never easy.<\/p>\n<p>Barack lived long enough to bridge the gap<br \/>\nbetween the promise of Obama and the new promise of Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Barack&#8217;s time will come to an end soon.<br \/>\nI hold on to a wish that he die naturally, without a struggle<br \/>\nbut I know that I may be called upon to be God<br \/>\nand be the one to determine when his life must end.<br \/>\nBeing God is not for wimps.<\/p>\n<p>As I contemplate his burial site and shroud<br \/>\nI am reminded of how he came to me, and how he huddled<br \/>\nunder the bed in the guestroom, not emerging except at night<br \/>\nfor six months or more, sleeping on the bathrobe of Lori&#8217;s on which he arrived.<br \/>\nHe will go out in the same way, in a spot along my fence<br \/>\nwhere I can see him and Topaz, reunited in my mind and affection.<\/p>\n<p>We have had some time to share some sadness<br \/>\nbut he is not doing his part; he purrs and I cry.<br \/>\nI would not be so sad except for the joy I have known.<br \/>\nBarack has been a special kind of companion for all these years.<\/p>\n<p>Joy and Sorrow have been my constant companions throughout my life.<br \/>\nAnd the words of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/58585\/58585-h\/58585-h.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Prophet<\/a> echo in my mind<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And how else can it be?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>Or the other way around: the depth of my sorrow is a reflection of the joy I have known.<\/p>\n<p>As Barack grows weaker by the day, I come more and more to realize how much I will miss him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barack has been diagnosed with terminal lymphoma.
